How to Reuse Zip Ties

Subscribe

Zip ties are designed with a teeth gear lock pattern and are made for one time use only. However, with some crafty tricks, these zip ties can be reused time and again.

A normal zip tie is designed with two basic components – gear rack and ratcheting head.

The gear rack has a long strip of teeth that is inserted to the ratcheting head and fixed as per the requirement. However, once tightened to a certain extent, the teeth strip cannot be pulled back and makes reuse virtually impossible.

Because reusable zip ties are much costlier than regular ones, we came up with a simple trick that can convert any ordinary zip into a reusable Zip tie.

Step 1:

Open the zip tie to its complete length and insert the gear rack into the ratcheting head.

Step 2:

Push the gear rack till the very end of the ratcheting head. Now tighten up the zip tie until you are left with a tiny loop, which has enough space for the gear rack.

Step 3:

Now this self-created tiny loop will replicate the function of a ratcheting head, but won’t break the teeth lock pattern.

Turn the gear rack and insert it into the new self-created tiny loop and you will have your own reusable zip tie.

Taking up this small DIY project is very interesting. You can also show your kids how to do it, and they will be happy to flaunt it to their friends and peers.
